What is in the catalogue?

Only certain records have so far been entered on the database. Work is ongoing to convert our old paper lists and transfer data from other formats. Please return frequently as lists of newly-deposited and converted records are being added all the time. Many of our full catalogues can still only be viewed in our searchroom, but a large proportion now has at least a summary available online (at ‘collection level’). All new full lists completed since 2006 also appear online. The online catalogue contains descriptions of a wide variety of records from many sources, both public and private, relating to Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland. These include archives of:

  • Leicestershire and Rutland County Councils, District Councils and Parish Councils
  • Leicester City Council
  • Quarter Sessions, Petty Sessions and other local courts
  • Anglican and nonconformist churches
  • Leicestershire Regiment and other military bodies
  • Landed estates and families
  • Solicitors, manufacturers and other commercial businesses
  • Schools, clubs, societies and other organisations
Also :
  • Maps and plans
  • Photographs
  • Some of our local studies library collections, such as printed ephemera, biography files, illustrations, pamphlets and sale particulars

For examples of the types of catalogue record you can find, see our 'Showcase'.

Many other local studies items can still only be found via the library card catalogue and indexes in the searchroom. The Leicestershire Libraries online catalogue, however, includes many Record Office library books published since 2006 and older publications which have been newly catalogued since 2009.

For other online resources relating to our holdings, see ‘Useful Links’. In particular, Access to Archives includes some lists of our records (especially those of businesses) which have yet to be added to this catalogue. The East Midlands Oral History Archive catalogue contains details of recordings which can be heard at the Record Office.
