Administrative HistoryGeorge Moore Henton was born in Leicester, the son of a senior clerk at Paget's Bank in 1861. He trained as an artist and died in 1924. Henton lived in Leicester and Windsor and most of the photographs reflect this. Leicestershire and Rutland views figure prominently in the collection, though there are pictures from other counties and many scenes of life along the River Thames; at Windsor, Eton, Henley and in London. All social groups and classes are represented from agricultural labourers hay making and shoe blacks on a London street, to Eton schoolboys at play and the effigies of long-dead noblemen on their tombs in church. visits to Ireland and Switzerland both resulted in photographs , adding an international flavour to the collection.
The photographic collection consists of nearly 2000 images on their original celluloid negatives.
The negatives have been printed and are available for consultation in Searchroom 2.
